FLUXCON | July 2022 Recap

FLUXCON | October 2022 Recap

Thank You Everyone Who Made The Last FLUXCON All That It Could Be!

For our first independent event it was truly a special one. Connect with the creative energies that made it happen on this archived page, and explore the photo gallery and film from the day. See you at the next one!

AFROFLUX is back at B-Side Hip Hop Festival this year with another FLUXCON on Saturday 10th June from 12noon Until 5.30pm At Birmingham Hippodrome. This year B-Side is celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop, and Afroflux will be bringing performance art, street art, martial arts, life drawing, comics and more.

Hip Hop is Afro Futuristic travel. The legendary MC and DJ Grandmaster Caz, told us that “Hip Hop didn’t invent anything. But it reinvented everything.”

Hip Hop didn’t invent rapping, or using decks, or, graffiti but it brought it all together, and reinvigorated street culture. You’re not supposed to use record decks like that, or beat box like that, or rap over someone else’s music, changing their composition, or spin on your head but Hip Hop has been home to remix culture. It was totally revolutionary, as far as music goes and people are still innovating, changing the world over.

Afroflux is about reinvigorating ourselves. It’s about revisiting, inventing, and re-imagining future ways of doing things.

It’s still different, and uniquely distinct, and evolving, and that’s perfect for Afroflux.

As always, we warmly welcome everyone of all ages to come along!

Explore the work of makers from across Birmingham and around the UK as they present DIY creations, prints, zines, crafts, t-shirts, comics and more, for you to discover, buy and trade.

Live Performance

This FLUXCON is in collaboration with B-Side Hip Hop festival, so as well as spoken word from the UK’s best poetic voices, expect live graffiti, breakin and beats from live DJs.

Drop in to a workshop to get live drawing, moving, making, and creating connections. Expect an open space to learn new skills throughout the day, where you can spend as little or as long as you like, with sessions also being added and popping up on the day.

As always, you’re welcome to come as you are or in your latest cosplay!

After Party

There will be no After Party this year, but watch this space for next time!

We couldn’t get enough of DJ Rizmi’s sonic Black and brown sounds at the last Fluxcon, so we’ve invited her back to bring high energy vibes to the space. Rizmi (Selextorhood, Sable and Narr Radio)  is interested in how the dimensions of music bring about collective movement – dissolving perceived boundaries between people and time – into the present and Oneness.

with Sun Rei

A special life-drawing session for people of all abilities. Practise the art of drawing with Sun Rei, a talented, enthusiastic bubble of Manga and K-Pop knowledge who, as well as being an engineer,  makes her own cosplay outfits. She will be doing short 2, 5 and 10 minute poses for us to practise our form and proportions. Drawing materials will be available but feel free to bring your own tools.

Over the years, Wavey Lines has been a space for Afroflux to connect and catch up with each other while practising our drawing skills in a non-pressured environment. It’s a fun, relaxing activity to do, whether you’re a seasoned visual artist or picking up a pencil for the first time in a while. Hope to see you there!

A gentle intro into the world of Capoeira with Denise Pantera, a dancer and Capoeirista with over 20 years of experience in this Afro-Brazilian art and culture.

Many people know of Capoeira as a very flashy and acrobatic martial art style that takes a lot of energy to study, but in this session Denise will be showing a more relaxed and easy going version of this fascinating artform. Please bring loose fitting clothes and a flexible mind.

With Feed My Creative | Janet Douglas

On display will be an interactive art piece by Janet from Feed my Creative, a multi-award winning collective that aims to reduce waste, encourage folks to become more sustainable with fabric, and inspire creativity through craft workshops. It was founded by Janet Douglas who wanted to give people the freedom to learn in a relaxed ‘No Limits’ environment, learn basic skills and the means to know how to create things for themselves at a relatively low cost.

For the art exhibit that will be on display, Janet used recycled parts of mixers and turntables that would have otherwise been thrown away, as well as denim, tapes and an A to Z map of Birmingham to create a mixer table that you’ll be able to touch and have a play with to mix your own sounds.

We came across it at an interactive tactile textile exhibition called ‘The Chapters of Our Lives’ , a Creative City Project by Janet which aimed to capture generational stories but with a difference.

with Florence Okoye

What are the futures you want to see? How do you want to make a difference in the everyday things you encounter? Sometimes it can seem pretty daunting trying to make a change but there are simple steps to draw out the world around us to see how the pieces fit together. Putting those steps together will give us an algorithm for how we can intervene and start creating our futures together.
Through this workshop, we will use storytelling to create our own personal algorithms that can help make a difference in the world around us. By the end of the session, you will have your own “I object!” zine – a reminder of the steps you can take to make a change.
